yesterday was a very bad day.....
the progression of the cancer had become worse in the last days, and breathing was becoming more and more labored. Other signs pointed to a worsening condition. We took Riley in to see our vet....and we had to let him go.
Riley was the best dog ever. Truely. He was so gentle around those smaller than him, so smart, full of life. He loved to be in the woods with me and covered much of the ground that slowly became trails. He loved the beach and digging in the sand, barking at the sand crabs. He was really our first child. We adopted him from the SPCA of Richmond, once I was home from college about 10 years ago.

He taught me patience and unconditional love and brought me and our family many smiles. Most places we went we didn't need a leash, but for only looks. He would stay by our side or return upon calling. Riley seemed more human than dog sometimes - he understood what we were saying. One thing he didn't like was baths, and he despised getting his toenails clipped.
My mother was one of his most loved companions. She would spoil him tremendously, as any grandmother typically does. Fresh cooked chicken would be waiting for him whenever Riley was going over to "Nanny's house". My mother brought him some chicken yesterday before we left, and it was the only thing yesterday that he ate.
we'll (I'll) miss you forever.
