Last weekend went out to Douthat for an overnighter and day ride w/ Crankee and Brad....although it was a cold start to the day (30s in the am) it warmed up to a nice mid 60s up on the ridges. Started w/ a climb from the campground up Ross Camp to Mountain Side and round to a bombing quick downhill on Mountain Top, then back up Mountain Side to Brushy Hollow. At the bottom Steve and I enjoyed some creek riding where we both managed to get wet feet trying to traverse the slime covered rocks under the suspension bridge.
Since we still had some daylight, we figured we'd keep going and turned up Stony Run (beautiful!! where the mountain laurel swallows you up in some places) to Tuscarora overlook. The afternoon sun was awesome as it cast the perfect shadows on the ridges to show each crevice in the mountains' back.
By this time the sun was starting to recede so we scramled over to Blue Suck Falls for a quick down hill into Huff's, back to the campground to pack up and leave town for grub. About 15-20 miles or so of trail was covered.....
The single speed was perfect running 32x20 and the Reba up front for some much needed control and cush on those rocky sections. This place is definitely one of the best places to do some mountain riding in VA. Thanks to Crankee and Brad for great company on my birthday weekend/ride day!!!
